Pneumococcal Vaccine For Kids

Pneumococcal vaccine protects the kids from the invasive Pneumococcal Disease. Do consult a pediatrician on vaccinating your child against this disease. It’s nothing but a bacteria which causes bacterial pneumonia and meningitis in children. I have administered Prevenar for my son. I got it done for Rs.3500 although the MRP price printed on the Prevenar box was Rs.3750. You can give this vaccine to your baby anywhere between 2 months to 5 years.
Three doses are given to infants between 2-6 months. Starting at the age of 2 months, there should be an interval of about one month each, for the remaining doses. A fourth dose should be given at the age of 2 years.
Two doses are given to infants between 7-11 months. Again there should be an interval of about one month each, for the remaining doses. A third dose should be given at the age of 2 years.
Two doses are given to children between 1-2 years. There should be an interval of about two months each, for the remaining doses.
A single dose is given to children between 2-5 yrs.
It’s not a mandatory vaccine but my pediatrician recommended it because, if at all the kids get meningitis (brain fever)etc. below two years of age, it would be fatal. So, he said it’s important to give them the protection when they are young. As that is the time they most need it.
